Week 2 - teaching practice - St. Mary's HSS PATTOM

Weekly Reflection Summary

Day 4 - 09 October, 2023

The day had no allotted teaching hours but included noon meal duty. I conducted a substitution class for Physical Education during the 7th period in 9Q. The day concluded with line duty.

Day 5 - 10 October, 2023

The day started with morning main gate line duty. In the 3rd period, I taught Physics to 8Q on "Magnetism," focusing on "Magnetic properties & magnetic compass." I used PHET simulations ("Magnet & Compass"), the blackboard, and material aids like bar magnets and magnetic compasses. Prince Sir, along with classmates Priyanka (Physical Science) and Sruthy (Natural Science), observed the class. Neena teacher (Physical Science, MTTC) also observed. The feedback indicated that students gained a clear understanding of magnetic properties and compasses.

During the 4th period, I taught Chemistry in 9C1 on "Periodic Trends in the Periodic Table," using the UBUNTU application "Kalzium," the blackboard, and ICT-oriented activities. Preetha teacher and classmate Priyanka observed. Students were able to understand electronic configurations and periodic trends.

In the 7th hour, I conducted a Physics class in 9Q on "Acceleration due to Gravity," using the PHET simulation of "Spring & Masses," ICT-oriented activities, and material aids like chalks and a box. The students were highly engaged, with many questions arising from their curiosity. Despite some off-topic discussions, I managed to cover the designated material effectively, and students seemed to grasp the concept well.

Day 6 - 12 October, 2023

The day started with main gate line duty. In the 2nd period, I conducted a concluding session on "Gravitation" for 9Q, focusing on the "Value of Acceleration Due to Gravity." We worked on textbook and previous year’s questions. The session was successful, providing students with a clear understanding of gravity and its applications. I assured them of additional notes for their reference.

During the 5th period, I observed a peer class by Sruthy (Natural Science) in 9U, and in the 7th period, I observed Divya’s (Mathematics) class in 8N.

Day 7 - 13 October, 2023

I began the day with a revision class for 8Q in preparation for the unit test series. In the 4th period, I taught Chemistry in 9C1 on "Representative Elements, Noble Gases, Lanthanides, Actinoids, & Transition Elements," using ICT presentations and the blackboard. The lesson helped students gain a closer understanding of the modern periodic table.

During the 5th period, I conducted a substitution class in 9Q, showing videos related to the Gravitation chapter and summarizing key points. Preetha teacher took a substitution class in the 6th hour in 9B1 on the "History of the Periodic Table."

Overall Reflection: This week included a variety of teaching and observational experiences. From delivering content in Physics and Chemistry to conducting revision sessions and substitutions, I engaged with different teaching methods and tools. Peer observations and feedback provided valuable insights into my teaching approach. The ability to adapt and cover additional material was beneficial for student understanding and engagement. The break for university examinations will provide an opportunity to reflect further and prepare for future teaching challenges.
